If you're using an advertising agency or PR agent, chances are you're used to having them put words in your mouth. You know what I mean... the statement in the press release that went something like, "We’re pleased to have this new invertebrated reverberator on-line and operating in our factory. It's going to take us to the N-th degree of customer satisfaction!"
That line went out to the press, but you didn't say it. A writer put those words in your mouth, and you signed off on them. Why? Because you're busy. You might have said it if you'd had time to think of it, but you didn't. So your PR people said it for you and you signed off on it.
Why stop there?
Here's a little secret from the pros: your ad agency or PR department is a veritable fount of wisdom, and they're just waiting to put words in your mouth - the kind that make you look good in front of your peers.
Seriously. We know that politicians, especially the ones at high levels, employ writers to craft their speeches. But do you think Bill Gates actually pens all of those speeches he's asked to give? Of course not. He dictates a handful of bullet points and passes it off to someone who fleshes it out for him.1
Another tip: these writing services extend beyond the realm of the speech. A good ghostwriter can do much more than that. During my career as a writer, I have ghosted speeches, trade journal articles, newspaper articles, a Catholic homily, even a novel for someone who was under contract but was too busy to cross the finish line.2
There's no shame in using a ghostwriter. You're too busy to act on all those requests for your wisdom if you had to write it yourself. However, if people are asking for speeches or articles, then you need to take advantage of the exposure you'd be getting if you said "yes." Remember, if they didn't value your opinion, they wouldn't ask. Plus, speeches, articles and the like really enhance your C.V.
So if you're sitting on a stack of emails, phone messages, or letters requesting that you share your knowledge with the world, don't fear. Getting your name out there is easier than you think. Who ya gonna call? Ghostwriters!
One warning: once you start, you might want to put your ad agency or PR person's name on speed dial. The results and rewards can be highly addicting.
