How to Get Noticed in a Good Way

  1. Apply for a relevant position.
  2. Don't take the shotgun approach and apply for everything and hope something sticks. Weigh your talents, skills and interests against what we're looking for. If you don't have a true interest or the skills to succeed in the position, you're better off looking for something that is a better match.

  3. Send relevant samples.
  4. If your application requires samples, please make sure they are relevant to the position you are applying for. Say you're applying for the Public Relations internship. Do not send a calculus paper as a writing sample. Think about what you are applying for and send samples that show your ability to perform in that position.

  5. Be professional.
  6. We do not care what your professor thought of the paper you sent in as a sample. If one of your samples would embarrass your parents, we probably don't want to see it, either. Do not ask us to ignore mistakes or certain sections of your samples. That will be the first thing we look at. Turn in something perfect to start with.

  7. Pay attention to detail.
  8. Spell and grammar checkers are standard equipment on word processors. Use them. Our industry is very detail oriented, and typos are a great way to remove yourself from consideration.

  9. Act the part.
  10. Is your e-mail address 2sexxy4u@whatever.com? Does your answering machine message have a toilet flushing, an entire song by your favorite artist, a prank of some kind, or offer no clues to your identity? Think because we sometimes dress casually that you can do it for a job interview? Like to alter your personality with chemicals of varying legality right before the interview? Then don't expect an internship here. You might think we are kidding, but we're not. We have seen each one of these during the screening and interview process. None of the offending applicants were hired.

  11. Expect to have a great experience.
  12. We're serious about what we expect from applicants, but once you're here prepare for an unforgettable experience. You'll be working with a group of people known for their creativity, their dedication, and their sense of humor. We all love what we do here, and we have a great time doing it. And we'd like you to share in the WRL experience.
