My Thirteen Weeks at WRL Advertising!

By Dan Kohl

…and in the blink of an eye it was over!

This is the only way I can summarize my experience while interning during my Spring semester. These past 13 weeks have gone by so rapidly that it’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that they’re already coming to an end. The culmination of years of upper division education and building a foundation of knowledge to help prepare me for what lies beyond have led me here, to an advertising agency in Canton – WRL Advertising.

Let’s just state facts: WRL is a great agency. You can go online and see the abundance of awards they’ve won, and the creative advertisements that have got them to where they are today, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. What makes WRL great is the people behind the scenes who collectively make the agency lively, innovative, and in my personal experience – welcoming. From day one walking into the agency in (for some strange reason) full suit attire, I was greeted with open arms and taken under their wings to get to know the advertising business and learn the day-to-day mechanisms that keep the motor running. Next thing you know, I’m sitting in on client meetings, diligently taking notes, being captivated by the industry knowledge around me and trying to understand this agency lifestyle that seemed so incredibly foreign to me. No matter how daunting the task, someone was always there to give me assistance and reassurance; the only problem was learning more than twenty names in such a short amount of time. If anything, that first week prepared me for the speed of agency life.

Over the course of the next twelve weeks, I became accustomed to the agency routine (if you can call it that) of being assigned a different task, meeting with different clients, and helping different colleagues. Any tasks that seemed intimidating at the beginning of my internship steadily became easier overtime. Meeting with a variety of clients gave me an understanding of the business side of advertising that I had never previously encountered. Because of my time at WRL, I now have a greater understanding of the business world and am ready to tackle the future that lies ahead.

In May I get my bachelor’s degree in advertising from Kent State University. Looking beyond university and my experiences at WRL makes my legs shake a little, but I assume that’s how most graduates feel! Looking back, I will always remember the people of WRL. From the wacky web guys laying the smackdown on everyone playing Quake, to the creatives who either sang or blasted on their speakers the greatest hits from decades past, or the day-to-day rapport the sales team had with each other discussing the worst places to eat in the area. Everyone at WRL Advertising had a huge impact on my understanding of this business, and you all will be greatly missed!
